Employer Highlight BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Charles Kearse II, College Recruiter Corporate (L) Angie Greenwood, Sr. IT Early Career Talent Acquisition Partner (R) | BCBS Interview Continued SCACE: New Beginnings: Many students are stepping into the workforce for the first time. What advice would BlueCross BlueShield of SC give to college graduates looking to make a strong start in their careers? BCBS: To get hired for their first job, they first need to work on their resume. Provide as much detail as possible, including all their work experience (even if it’s not related to the job they’re applying for because that experience can show various soft skills that they’ve obtained), extracurricular, skills, etc. Practice interviewing as much as possible. Utilize your career services to do mock interviews. Attend as many career fairs and on campus events as possible. Network, including asking your parents who they know. Use social media to network, especially LinkedIn; make sure their LI profile is updated and detailed and has their picture on it. Once they’ve started their career, again, network within the company. You never know who you might work with in the future. Ask questions, be curious, show interest and initiative. Be open to trying new things. SCACE:Growing Together: Collaboration is key to professional development. How does BlueCross BlueShield of SC engage with South Carolina colleges and universities to support students through mentorship, networking, and job readiness programs? BCBS: Regarding our interns and ELTP Students, all are assigned a mentor from the area they’ll be working in. But all our areas are team-oriented and friendly and encourage students to ask questions and network. We deliver a Best Practices overview with the interns when they start to encourage them to be their best advocate by talking with their manager, mentor, and team about what they want to get exposure to and how they like to receive feedback. BlueCross regularly attends career fairs, on campus events, speaks with classes, participates in mock interview and resume review sessions with colleges and universities throughout South Carolina. An important aspect of collaboration is the schools (including professors) doing as much as they can to have their students attend these events to make sure their students know about these opportunities and the employers want to return to campus. |
